Our mission is very simple:

To provide a space for families where the most tragic of situations can be a little more comfortable.

Our Story

We are Julianna and Joseph Bruno Caldara III, and with the help of our family and friends, we founded Room IV, a 501(c)(3) organization, in honor of our son, Joseph Bruno Caldara IV who was born still on March 8, 2024. Through this organization, we have furnished and continuously stock a room on the labor and delivery floor of Albany Medical Center, which is separate from the waiting room and dedicated to providing a private and comfortable space for families who are experiencing the loss of a newborn child. This room contains resources, distractions, comfortable furniture, activity books, a television, puzzles, snacks, and anything families might need during this time.

This mission was born from our own tragic experience. May 15th, 2024 was supposed to be one of the most exciting days of our lives as it was the day our first child was due. However, we learned on March 6th, 2024  when I was 7 months pregnant, that our son no longer had a heartbeat. Two days later, Joseph Bruno Caldara IV was born still at Albany Medical Center.

The care we received at Albany Medical Center while going through every step of this process was incredible. Our nurses were kind, compassionate, and selfless, and our doctors were informative yet gentle and empathetic. Thanks to other local nonprofits in the area, we were provided with memory-making opportunities and reminders to be sent home with us. It was in the moments of memory-making that we decided we needed to do something to also help future families who will unfortunately experience what we did.

Approximately 21,000 pregnancies a year will end in stillbirth, according to the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. To break it down further, that’s about 1 in every 175 pregnancies, or the equivalent of a school bus full of children per day.

Our families were with us every step of the way, but they could not escape the joys and positivity of the labor and delivery floor when they felt anything but happy. After many conversations with our loved ones, we decided that this is where we could truly help.

Room IV has been in use since September, but will officially open on March 9th, 2026, almost two years to the day of Joseph’s birth. We are  honored to share that we have achieved  our goal of opening at Albany Med,  and we are now  looking to expand these rooms to other local hospitals. While we hope that one day this concept will not be needed, the reality is a room like this will be utilized frequently for the foreseeable future.
